Philosophy on Teaching

Over the years, I have found what works for one group of students may or may not work with another group of students. Therefore, I have learned that flexibility is crucial in classroom management and instruction. In order to develop a rapport with my students I need to learn about who they are. This requires listening skills on the part of the teacher and providing opportunities for students to share information about themselves. Sometimes I accomplish this by distributing a formal assignment. On other occasions, I have asked students to reflect and answer questions about what they enjoyed learning in my classroom that day, week or year.

For me learning is a continuous process. I will continue to enroll in educational opportunities for the rest of my life. My journey through education did not stop at high school graduation. I continued on and attained a bachelors and masters degree. Currently, I am pursuing a doctoral degree in education. I instill this same belief in all of my students. Knowledge is a gift that you can give yourself that no one can ever take away from you. I encourage all of my students from the first day of class to take control of their future by being an active participant in their learning.

In addition to college courses, I seek out other educational opportunities to broaden my knowledge base in various areas. Once I have learned something useful for the classroom or for my own personal experience I want to share it with others. I have provided individual and group instruction for colleagues in the areas of lesson content, instructional methods and the use of instructional technology such as the internet, digital cameras, presentation software and interactive whiteboard lessons.
